There's got to be some irony in the fact that my first assigned unit at the Middle School is the one subject I'll be licensed to teach in May but haven't taken myself yet: Economics. I'm actually enrolled in the college class right now, trying to battle my way through it. Wish I could take it at the 8th grade level though, partly because it'd be easier and partly because I'd feel so much passion for it again.
It's been fun and interesting, learning right alongside all the kids and teaching them at the same time. On Wednesday, we read an article about how rising prices in gas are causing rising prices in food which are causing some Haitians (who can't afford the food now) to eat dirt cakes instead. The kids really got into, and by the end, they wanted to know what we could do: some kind of fundraise or field trip to package food for them. Feed My Starving Children has a location in Brooklyn Center, but I'm not sure how I could pull it off without endorsing a Christian organization. How much fun would that be?
